What is Required to Volunteer at the Colorado State Archives?

Whether you are retired, a student seeking to build your resume, or a working professional looking for something rewarding to do, volunteering at the Archives requires the following:

  • Ability to work collaboratively with Archives staff and fellow volunteers to achieve institutional goals
  • Commitment to lifelong learning and a willingness to participate in comprehensive training

How to Become a Colorado State Archives Volunteer

If you are 18 years and older and decide to become a volunteer, you can expect to go through the following process:

  1. Complete a volunteer application
  2. Participate in an interview with a volunteer coordinator
  3. Provide an ID in order to obtain a volunteer badge and access card

Volunteer Projects Currently Available at the Colorado State Archives

Colorado Probate Indexing Project

Our plan is to create a single index for the entire State of Colorado, which covers every probate case ever contested in the state. Our goal is to create a single document that includes: name of estate, executor, date (year), case number, county, and physical location. When the project is completed, researchers will be able to go to one document to find the location of the records they need. Most of the project will be working with original case files, or original indexes and creating a database. Onsite work at the State Archives or select county courthouses will be required, as well as knowledge of Microsoft Excel.

Indexing will take place on Wednesdays-Fridays from 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. on an as-needed basis. If you are interested in volunteering, please complete a volunteer application and you will be contacted by an Archives staff member.
