Amache Japanese Internment Camp Designated National Historic Site

On Friday, March 18, 2022, President Biden signed legislation designating Colorado's Camp Amache as a national historic site.

This new national recognition of the Amache National Historic Site commenced from the support of Governor Polis, the Senate, and the House, calling on the National Park Service to support inclusion for the former Amache Japanese Internment Camp Site near Grenada, Colorado, then sponsored by Colorado U.S. lawmakers.

This camp was established 140 miles east of Pueblo in southeastern Colorado. Since the postal designation was Amache, it was called Granada and Amache. It was in operation by August 1942 and officially closed on October 15, 1945.

The Colorado State Archives would like to share their collection, giving some insight into the events during this time.

The Colorado State Archives secures "The Governor's Collection." This collection contains the official acts of Governor Ralph L. Carr, his correspondence with individuals and groups concerning the war and the Japanese, many speeches that he gave to the Japanese Internment Camp, and a decent amount of photos.
